Husky season in Lapland 2026-27

The dogs are already back in harness, pulling carts on gravel. Here is when the sleds come out this winter in Rovaniemi, Levi and Kiruna, and how far ahead you need to book.

Husky sledding in Lapland runs on the snow's timetable, not the calendar's. On paper the 2026-27 season goes from late November or early December to early April. The first weeks are a gamble. The middle is about as safe as winter gets. The end depends on how fast the spring sun softens the trails.

This post sums up what we found in late October 2026: published season dates, what the Finnish Meteorological Institute says about snow, what kennels run before the snow, and when to lock in a Christmas or February date.

The quick answer

Expect sled trips on snow from roughly late November or early December 2026 to early April 2027, with January to March the safest stretch. Before the snow, some kennels run wheeled cart rides instead, which are not sledding. Book Christmas and New Year as soon as your flights are fixed, and February four to six weeks ahead. Snow is never guaranteed, and nobody can promise you a date.

When does the 2026-27 husky season start and end in Lapland?

Snow sledding usually starts in late November or early December and runs to early April. January to March is the reliable core.

The one firm date we found is from Levi, where one large safari company's winter programme runs its safaris from 1 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, split into a Christmas and New Year block (1 December to 6 January) and a winter block (7 January to 4 April). Its 5 km and 10 km husky trips run in both blocks. The 15 km trip only starts in January, which tells you something about how kennels feel about December trails.

Rovaniemi has no official opening day. Visit Rovaniemi says first snow usually comes in November, "sometimes as early as in October, sometimes only around December", and that snow usually lasts until April. Kennels open their snow trips when the trails are ready, not before.

When does snow arrive in Rovaniemi?

Usually in November, sometimes October, sometimes not until December. Lasting snow cover is what matters for sleds, and it varies from year to year.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute counts a day as snow-covered when there is at least 1 cm on the ground at the morning observation, and calls the longest unbroken run of those days the permanent snow cover. In Lapland, it says, winter lasts about seven months and permanent snow comes much earlier than in the south. The snow is usually deepest in early April in Lapland, which is why late March trips can be so good.

A light dusting in October means nothing for a sled. You need a packed base on the trail. Winter 2024 is the cautionary tale: in early December the area around Rovaniemi was "largely snow-free", and a safari company boss told Yle that husky tours had faced the most problems, with cancellations and refunds. If your trip is in the first half of December, book a trip with free cancellation and keep a second date in your back pocket.

Rovaniemi, Levi or Kiruna: where is the season longest?

All three run from roughly December to early April. Levi has published dates; Kiruna in Sweden often has snow from mid November.

Levi sits further north than Rovaniemi and is a ski resort, so its season is organised around fixed dates (see above). Kiruna is in Swedish Lapland, well north of the Arctic Circle. Nature Travels says conditions there are normally suitable from around mid November, with some years much earlier, and that lowland tours can run to the very end of April.

Rovaniemi is the furthest south of the three and the most likely to wobble in a mild December. It is also where most people fly in. If your dates are fixed and early, Levi or Kiruna gives you slightly better odds. Our guide to the best time for a husky safari goes month by month.

What can you do with huskies before the snow?

Ride a wheeled cart pulled by the dogs, or visit a kennel. Both are fine ways to meet the team. Neither one is sledding.

Kennels keep the dogs fit in autumn by hitching them to carts or quads. Some sell it as a tour. In Rovaniemi there is a small-group autumn husky cart ride (two hours, up to eight people) rated 4.7 from 27 reviews on GetYourGuide, and one guest in October 2026 noted it is "about a 15-minute drive" from town.

Responsible Travel says kennels train dogs with carts or quads in the snow-free months, as long as it is below about +10 C. Summer is simply too warm. If you are in Lapland in October or November and the snow is late, a cart ride is the honest option. Just don't book it thinking it is the sled ride from the photos.

When should you book husky rides for Christmas, New Year and February?

Christmas and New Year: as soon as flights are booked. February: four to six weeks ahead. January is the easiest month to book late.

Rovaniemi gets very busy in December. Yle reported that the city logged 1.1 million overnight stays between November and March in winter 2024-25, and that the airport handled up to 80 flights a day in the run-up to Christmas (Yle News). Small-group trips have eight seats and sell out first.

February brings European school holidays and the best mix of snow and light. Every GetYourGuide trip on this site cancels for free up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing if plans change. Prices are per person, not per sled, which catches out a lot of couples: two people sharing a sled pay two fares. Details in our price guide.

Are March and April still good for husky rides?

Yes, often the best. The snow is at its deepest, days are long, and it is warmer. Very warm afternoons slow the dogs down.

By March Rovaniemi has about 12 hours of daylight, according to Visit Rovaniemi, against roughly two and a half in December. That changes everything about a sled trip: you see the forest, photos work, and nobody's fingers go numb.

The catch is heat, which sounds odd until you remember huskies are built for -20 C. A Kiruna reviewer wrote that it was "far too hot" on her day and the team needed a lot of breaks. In late March and April, take the morning departure. The snow is firmer and the dogs run better.
