A self-drive husky morning in Kiruna

A van takes you from Kiruna to a kennel in the hamlet of Kalixforsbron, where you learn to harness the dogs and then drive a sled across frozen lakes, forest and marshland. Pick it for a full, unhurried morning in daylight with eight guests at most and a hot lunch by the fire.

Self-Drive Husky Morning with Lunch, Kiruna

About this experience

Kiruna is in Sweden, and this trip has a different feel from the big Rovaniemi farms. A van picks you up at your hotel and drives to the kennel at Kalixforsbron, where you're dressed in a snowsuit, boots, gloves, hat and socks. You're usually taught to handle and harness the dogs yourself, which guests love.

Two of you share each sled and take turns steering and sitting. The route crosses frozen lakes, quiet forest and open marsh, and with luck you'll see reindeer, moose, Arctic hare or a ptarmigan. One guest described teams of five dogs and said turning takes some technique. Back at base you warm up by an open fire in a Nordic tipi with hot soup, sandwiches and Swedish fika.

It's $291 per person for 5 hours, the most expensive trip on this site. You're paying for the length of the morning, the small group, and the lunch. On mild spring days the dogs need more breaks, which one reviewer noticed. If your kids are small or nobody wants to drive, the family sit-down ride is cheaper and gentler.

  • Eight guests at most
  • You help harness your own dogs

What guests say

★★★★★

A wonderful morning exploring the surroundings (frozen lake and forest) on a sleigh pulled by five dogs. Alternating between driver and passenger, which allows you to discover both aspects of the sled (driving is a bit technical sometimes, especially when turning) [...] The dogs are very friendly, cuddly, and love their "work".

It was absolutely a wonderful experience. We went with my 6-year-old child, and everything was carefully arranged for him. Our guide was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed every moment.

Everyone on site was very nice and made sure that you had a great experience. The dogs have a good life and are free to roam the grounds. The tour went straight through the countryside, across a lake, and partly through the forest, which was a lot of fun.

The activity was a lot of fun! The huskies were amazing, the light lunch in a Sami tent was delicious and transfers were really convenient. [...] Highly recommend!

Tips before you book

  • Bring a scarf or balaclava. The listing asks for one, and the kennel recommends contact lenses over glasses.
  • Bring a camera. As a passenger you get the best seat for photos.
  • Turning is the hard part. Lean into corners and ride the brake before the bend, not in it.
  • Late-season warm days mean more rest stops for the dogs. Go in January or February for the cold, fast trails.
  • The kennel sits at the same base as the night tour, so don't book both unless you really want twice the dogs.

Yes. Two participants share one sled and take turns steering and sitting, after a detailed briefing. You're also usually taught to harness the dogs.

What food is included on the Kiruna morning tour?

A light lunch by an open fire in a Nordic tipi: hot soup, sandwiches and Swedish fika (coffee and something sweet).

Can children do the Kiruna husky morning?

Guests have done it with children; one family brought a 6-year-old and said everything was arranged for him. Kids ride as passengers. For a gentler option, see the sit-down family ride.
