Northern lights husky sledding from Kiruna

After dark, a van takes you to a kennel outside Kiruna where you steer a husky sled through forest and over frozen lakes, then warm up with coffee and fika in a tipi. Pick it for the night ride itself, with a chance of aurora on clear nights and never a promise.

Northern Lights Husky Sledding, Kiruna

About this experience

The evening starts with a pickup in Kiruna and a 30-minute van ride to Kalixforsbron, the same kennel as the morning tour. You dress in the snowsuit, boots, gloves, hat and socks provided, then a 30-minute briefing covers handling, harnessing and steering. Then you head out into the dark.

The itinerary allows about 1.5 hours on the trail, and guests report around an hour of actual sledding, across marshland, through tall trees and over frozen lakes. After that comes 30 minutes by an open fire in a Nordic tipi with coffee or tea and Swedish fika, and the van back. Groups are capped at eight; one guest was the only person booked and loved it.

Now the bit nobody likes hearing: the northern lights are weather. The listing says sightings cannot be guaranteed, and that's true of every aurora tour. Some guests saw big displays, others faint ones. Book it because a night ride behind huskies is worth doing anyway. And dress for it: one guest sat at about -22 C for an hour and froze despite the gear.

What guests say

★★★★★

An absolutely incredible experience! [...] What was especially great was that we got to drive the dog sled ourselves [...] Although there's no guarantee of seeing the Northern Lights, we were incredibly lucky to witness a beautiful, large, and numerous display. Our guide, Svenja, was simply fantastic. Very attentive, warm, and professional.

The instructions are clear and the duration of the ride is long enough to really enjoy it. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights on our return to camp, and the little café under the tepee was very pleasant.

Tips before you book

  • Book it early in your stay. If clouds roll in, you still have nights to try an aurora hunt.
  • Check the cloud forecast, not just the aurora forecast. Clear sky matters more.
  • Bring a scarf and a spare layer. Sitting still as a passenger at night gets cold fast.
  • Phones die quickly in the cold. Keep yours in an inside pocket until the guide stops.
  • Ask the guides about the dogs' rest days and what happens when they retire.

Frequently asked questions

Will I see the northern lights on the Kiruna husky tour?

Maybe. The listing says sightings cannot be guaranteed, and it depends on clear skies and solar activity. Several guests saw displays, some faint, some big. Treat the aurora as a bonus to a night sled ride.

How long are you on the sled at night?

The itinerary gives about 1.5 hours for the guided tour, and guests report around an hour of sledding. The whole trip is 3.5 hours with transfers, briefing and the tipi break.

Do you drive the sled yourself at night?

Yes, you steer your own sled after a detailed briefing on handling, harnessing and steering. Guests describe it as easy to follow, even for nervous first-timers.

How cold is a night husky tour in Kiruna?

Cold. One guest had about -22 C and said an hour sitting still was hard even in the provided suit. Wear thermals underneath and bring a scarf.
