The best time for a husky safari

Husky season on snow runs from about late November to April. Every month in it gives you a different ride: dark and festive, deep-cold and powdery, or long and bright.

The dogs will run in almost anything. What changes through the winter is the snow under them, the light around you and how cold your hands get. December has Christmas and two hours of daylight. February has the coldest air and some of the best trails. March has sunshine and long days, and the odd warm spell that slows the dogs.

Snow is never guaranteed, early or late. Below is what each month is really like in Rovaniemi, Levi and Kiruna, using figures from the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the local tourist boards.

The quick answer

For the safest snow and real winter, go from mid-January to mid-March. February is the sweet spot: cold, settled trails and 6 to 9 hours of daylight. December works and feels magical, but days are about two hours long and Christmas week is the busiest of the year. Early November and late April are gambles on snow. Outside winter, some farms run husky rides on wheeled carts.

When is husky safari season in Lapland?

On snow, usually from late November or early December to April. The exact start and end move with the snow every year.

Farms need enough packed snow on the trails before they run full safaris. In Finnish Lapland that's typically late November or early December, and the season runs into April. Responsible Travel gives December to April as the general sledding season (Responsible Travel). The Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that snow arrives much earlier in Lapland than in the south and is usually deepest in mid-March, often as late as early April (FMI snow statistics).

Kiruna is similar. Its tourist board says the snow usually comes to stay at the end of October, some winter activities start by late November, and they run as long as there's snow, usually until mid-April (Kiruna Lappland). This winter's start is tracked in the 2026-27 season post.

What is each month like for a husky ride?

November is a snow gamble, December dark and busy, January and February cold and reliable, March bright and mild, April a late-season bet.

Daylight and temperatures below are Kiruna's tourist-board figures, which track closely with Levi; Rovaniemi, further south, gets a little more light.

Is December a good time for a husky safari?

Yes, with two catches: about two hours of daylight, and the busiest weeks of the year around Christmas.

Visit Rovaniemi gives about 2 hours 16 minutes of daylight on 24 December (Visit Rovaniemi), and the blue twilight of the polar night lasts from mid-November to mid-January (Visit Rovaniemi, winter). Further north the sun doesn't rise at all for a while. In Levi the polar night normally starts in December and ends in early January (Levi); in Kiruna, December is polar night too.

It isn't black. The snow reflects every scrap of light, and the sky goes pink and blue around noon. A midday departure in December is a lovely thing. A 3 p.m. one is a ride in the dark. Pick the slot closest to noon.

Christmas and New Year are when everyone comes. Kiruna's tourist office tells visitors to book activities ahead for that period, and Rovaniemi is busier still. Book early and lean on free cancellation. The Christmas 2026 post has the details for this year.

Are January and February the best months?

For snow and proper winter, yes. Expect -15 to -25°C in January, and colder. February adds light: 6 to 9.5 hours in Kiruna.

After New Year the crowds thin, the snow is settled and the trails are fast. It's cold. Temperatures of -15 to -25°C are not unusual in January, and guests on the Kiruna family sleigh have written about riding at -30 and -35. One January guest: "Although very cold temperatures at -35 degrees everything went perfect". Another: "They provided excellent clothing that helped cope with -30 degrees temperature."

Huskies are happiest in that cold. You'll be fine too, inside a borrowed thermal overall, as long as you layer wool underneath and protect your face. February is our pick for a first safari: all the cold-weather snow of January with three or four extra hours of light for the views and the photos.

Is March or April too late for a husky safari?

March is great: the deepest snow of the year, long days, milder air. April is a late bet; Kiruna's activities usually run until mid-April.

March is the month locals love. Kiruna gets 10 to 13.5 hours of daylight and temperatures around -10°C. The snow is at its deepest in mid-March across Lapland (FMI). It's the most comfortable month to sit in a sled.

The catch is warmth. Huskies are built for cold, and a mild, sunny day slows them down. One Kiruna guest wrote: "Unfortunately, it was far too hot when I went; we had to take a lot of breaks". A Santa Claus Village guest found that "The snow had alreasy become slushy and watery in some spots but the trail was still good to go". Book a morning slot in late March and April, when the snow is firmer and the air cooler.

Morning, afternoon or night: when should you go?

Late morning to midday for the best light in December and January. Morning in spring. Night only if the aurora is the point, and it's never guaranteed.

  • Midwinter: book the slot closest to noon to sled in what little light there is.
  • Late winter and spring: morning, while the snow is firm and the air cool. The dogs run better.
  • At night: the Kiruna northern lights ride ($251, 3.5 hours, eight guests at most) takes you out on the trail after dark. The listing says it plainly: the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Book it because sledding in the dark under a big sky is special on its own, not as an aurora tour.

Driving a team in the dark on your first day isn't easy, and you see less of the forest. If you only do one ride, do it in daylight.

Can you go husky sledding without snow?

Not on snow, but some farms run husky rides on wheeled carts in autumn, and visits with training dogs.

When there's no snow, mushers keep their dogs fit by having them pull carts or quads. They do that when it's cool: Responsible Travel says summer is too warm, and farms train on wheels when the temperature is below about +10°C. Some farms sell those runs as autumn "husky on wheels" rides. GetYourGuide lists one in Rovaniemi rated 4.7 from 27 reviews. Kiruna's tourist board mentions September tours where you see dogs trained for the winter.

A cart ride is fun, and it's a good look at how a farm keeps its dogs fit off-season. It isn't a sled ride. If you want snow under the runners, wait for winter.

What if there's no snow or it's too warm on your date?

Farms run in most weather and cancel only for extreme conditions, with a refund. Mild weather mostly means a shorter or slower ride.

The Levi listing runs "rain or shine" and cancels only for extreme weather like storms, with a full refund. The small-group Rovaniemi listing says the safari's length varies with the snow and the dogs' pace. Early or late in the season, ask the farm before you go whether they're running the full loop.

Our advice for November and April: book with free cancellation, which every trip here has, check the snow a few days out, and keep a spare day in your plans. In midwinter, just go.
