Husky safari prices

A husky ride in Lapland costs anything from $70 to $291 per person. The price tag hides the real question: how many kilometres of trail you get, and who stands on the runners.

Booking choice: The 6 km self-drive safari in Rovaniemi, from $245 per person. Check dates Tour details

Search for a husky ride in Rovaniemi and you get a wall of listings between about $70 and $290. They look alike: huskies, a sled, a borrowed thermal suit, a hot drink. They are not alike. At the cheap end a musher drives you round a 2.5 km loop for 7 to 12 minutes. At the other end you drive your own team for 6 to 10 km, swap with your partner halfway and warm up by a fire.

Every price on this page is the from-price per person in USD on GetYourGuide or Viator, checked in October 2026. Per person matters more than anything else here, because two people share each sled. A couple never pays for one sled. They pay two fares.

The quick answer

The Santa Claus Village ride costs $70 for 2.5 km with a musher driving. Self-drive safaris of 5 to 10 km cost $222 to $261 in Finland, and the Kiruna morning with lunch is $291. Prices are per person, so a couple sharing one sled pays $444 to $582. Per kilometre, the small-group Rovaniemi safari and the Levi run give the most trail for the money.

How much does a husky ride in Lapland cost in 2026?

From $70 per person for a short ride to $291 for a long Kiruna morning with lunch. Most proper self-drive safaris sit between $222 and $261.

Here is every husky trip on this site, cheapest first. Look at the third column before the second. A trip length includes the bus, the briefing, the coffee and the dog cuddles, so it tells you very little about the sledding.

Two things jump out. The $210 combo day costs nearly as much as a real safari and gives you 500 metres behind the dogs. And the gap between the cheapest proper self-drive ($222 in Levi) and the dearest ($291 in Kiruna) is smaller than the gap between the $70 taster and any of them.

Is the price per person or per sled?

Per person. Two adults share one sled and swap halfway, but each pays a full fare. A couple on the 6 km Rovaniemi safari pays $490.

This catches people out more than any other detail. The listings say "two per sled" and some readers take that as a sled price. It isn't. The Levi listing spells out the format: "Each sled will be driven by a 2-person team. The driver of the sled can switch halfway through the tour." The Kiruna morning says the same: "Two participants share one sled and take turns."

What that means in real money:

  • A couple in Levi: 2 x $222 = $444, for one sled and 7 km, about 3.5 km each at the front.
  • A couple in Rovaniemi: 2 x $245 = $490 for the 6 km self-drive or the small-group safari.
  • A couple in Kiruna: 2 x $291 = $582 for the morning with lunch.
  • A family of four on the short ride: 4 x $70 = $280, before any child discount, for 7 to 12 minutes in one sled.

Children ride in the sled too, and they count as passengers. Check the child rate on the booking screen before you pay four adult fares. Some listings show one, some don't. More on that in husky safaris with kids.

What does the price include?

On every trip here: the winter clothing, a guide, the ride and a hot drink. Transfers are included on all of them. A real meal is included only on the Kiruna morning and the combo day.

  • Clothing: thermal overall, boots and mittens on the safaris; the 6 km Rovaniemi trip adds wool socks; the Kiruna trips add hats and socks; the short ride lends Arctic outer clothing.
  • Transfers: pickup in Rovaniemi centre or Santa Claus Village for the 6 km self-drive; Napapiiri or the city centre for the small-group safari; hotel pickup on the Viator self-drive and in Kiruna; set pickup points in Levi.
  • Food: hot juice and cookies on the short ride; warm drinks and cookies in Levi; sausages, marshmallows and Christmas cookies by the kota fire on the small-group safari; soup, sandwiches and Swedish fika on the Kiruna morning; salmon soup on the combo day.
  • Time with the dogs: on all the safaris. Several guests mention puppies.
  • Not included: photos, tips, and lunch on most Finnish safaris.

Don't plan on the fire-side snack as a meal. One guest on the small-group trip, who loved it, still wrote: "the lunch is really meager; for an adult, it's more like a snack." Eat first.

What is the price per kilometre?

About $25 to $52 per km on the self-drive safaris, and $28 on the Santa Claus Village ride. The short ride isn't overpriced. It's just short.

We divided each from-price by the distance in the listing. On a self-drive trip you drive about half that distance and ride the rest.

By the minute, the two trips with a time figure come out close: $4.90 to $8.20 a minute on the small-group safari (30 to 50 minutes), $5.80 to $10 on the short ride (7 to 12 minutes). Per km isn't the whole story. The 6 km Rovaniemi trip is the most booked here for a reason: it runs often, picks up at Santa Claus Village and has 1,569 reviews averaging 4.6. And the Kiruna morning has no km figure but 5 hours on the farm, a light lunch and a 5.0 rating from 190 guests. Still, if you want the most trail per dollar, the small-group safari wins. One guest counted "about 9 km (5.6 miles) of sledding, with a couple of breaks for the dogs", and another "rode the sled for about 50 minutes."

Why are husky safaris so expensive?

You are paying for dozens of dogs that eat all year, for a season on snow of about five months, and for guides, gear and a bus out into the forest.

Sledding on snow runs roughly from late November or early December to April. The dogs need feeding, exercise, vets and care for the other seven months too, plus the years after they stop running. In 2017 an estimated 4,000 huskies worked in tourism in Finnish Lapland, and some farms keep 400 to 500 dogs (Responsible Travel). That is a big food bill.

Then there's the gear. Every trip here lends a full thermal overall, boots and mittens, and every one of them includes a transfer. Groups are capped because a team can only pull so much: eight guests at most on the small-group safari, the Viator self-drive and both Kiruna sled trips.

Our honest take: when a husky ride is cheap, the saving almost always comes out of the distance. And a farm that charges very little for a lot of tourists has to run its dogs a lot. That's worth thinking about, and it's covered in is husky sledding ethical.

Is the $70 Santa Claus Village ride worth it?

Yes, if you know what you're buying: 2.5 km, 7 to 12 minutes, a musher driving. No, if you want to drive a team yourself.

The Santa Claus Village ride is rated 4.7 by 1,587 guests, and the most common complaint is the obvious one: guests say it feels too short and wish for more time on the sled. Up to four adults fit in one sled and you don't drive. Afterwards there is hot juice and cookies in a kota.

It works for small kids, for anyone who can't stand on the runners, and for a cruise or day visitor with an hour to spare at the Arctic Circle. One guest summed it up: "the ride even though short felt like a long time and enough for the experience." For anyone who has pictured themselves driving a team through the forest, it will feel like a teaser. Spend the extra on the 7 km Levi run and its Rovaniemi equivalents instead.

Ten minutes behind the dogs with a musher on the brake, juice and cookies after. Good with small kids.

Is Kiruna more expensive than Rovaniemi or Levi?

A little. The Kiruna morning is $291 against $222 to $261 in Finland, but it includes a light lunch, 5 hours on the farm and a group of eight at most.

Kiruna is in Swedish Lapland, a long way from Rovaniemi across the border, so nobody should pick it for price alone. Pick it if you are already there. Its trips rate as well as anything on this site: the morning with lunch at 5.0 from 190 reviews, the family sleigh at 5.0 from 228, and the northern lights ride at 4.8 from 124.

Levi is the cheapest real safari on this site, at $222 for 7 km. If you are staying in Levi, the transfer is short, and only the small-group Rovaniemi trip beats it per kilometre.

When should you book, and can you get your money back?

Book early for Christmas and New Year. Every GetYourGuide trip here cancels free up to 24 hours before, and the Viator ones do too.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is standard on every trip on this site, and GetYourGuide adds a reserve-now, pay-later option. That makes an early booking close to free. The busiest stretch is the Christmas and New Year fortnight, when Kiruna's tourist office tells visitors to book activities ahead of time (Kiruna Lappland).

Weather rarely cancels a trip. The Levi listing says it runs "rain or shine" and is cancelled only for extreme weather such as storms, with a full refund. What a mild spell does change is the trail: soft snow slows the dogs and the guide may shorten the loop. The small-group listing says plainly that the safari's length varies with the snow and the dogs' pace. The 2026-27 season post tracks when the snow arrives this winter.
