Small family kennel · Kurravaara, Kiruna, Sweden
You sit in a long sleigh with your family while a guide drives the team along frozen lakes and the Torne valley, with a stop in a tipi for fire-made coffee and homemade cake. Pick it when the kids are too small to drive or nobody fancies the runners: 228 reviews, all four or five stars.

The kennel is in Kurravaara, about 7 km out of Kiruna along the Kurravaara road. The minibus does a round of the central hotels just after 9 a.m., or you can drive yourself and arrive between 09.30 and 09.40. Arctic outerwear is supplied in sizes for the whole family, which saves packing a snowsuit for a five-year-old.
Then you sit. The sleighs are long, seating two adults and three kids, and a guide drives while telling you about the dogs. Guests describe frozen lakes, the Torne river valley and the odd reindeer herd. Halfway you stop at a tipi for coffee made over the fire and homemade cake, then swap seats for the ride back. Plenty of cuddle time with calm dogs is built in.
It's 2.5 hours in total for $195 per person, and one honest reviewer pointed out that half an hour of that is changing clothes. Kids pay a fare too. Nobody drives, so it's not a safari in the self-drive sense, but it's a far better ride than a 2.5 km loop. Groups are capped at 12.
Scandic or Elite Hotel Frost at 09.15 (bus stop opposite), Arctic Eden at 09.20, Camp Ripan at 09.25. Or drive and arrive at 09.30 to 09.40.
Outerwear for everyone, a hello to the dogs and a safety talk.
A guide drives the sleigh along trails and frozen water while you watch for moose and reindeer.
Fire, coffee or tea, and homemade cake while the dogs rest.
Ride back to the kennel, more dog cuddles, then the minibus to town.
★★★★★A friendly, fun, exciting adventure. The transfers were prompt and comfortable. The outoor clothing provided was clean, comfortable and well fitting. [...] We saw a herd of reindeer on the Torne river and saw some spectacular scenery. We had a 12 year old and a 75 year old in our party and both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt safe on the sledges.
★★★★★Wonderful!! The staff was amazing and the dogs are super friendly, waiting for you to be pet. During the ride, our guide explained to us all about the sled dogs.
★★★★★Amazing experience, in an outstanding landscape, with great staff and adorable huskies! Although very cold temperatures at -35 degrees everything went perfect and we we were really satisfied with everything!
