Booking choice: The 6 km self-drive safari in Rovaniemi, from $245 per person. Check dates Tour details

Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle, and most visitors arrive with a short list: Santa, reindeer, northern lights, huskies. The huskies are the easy part to book and the easy part to get wrong. Listings called "husky ride", "husky safari" and "husky adventure" range from a 500 metre spin on a combo day to 10 km of forest trail with you on the brake.

There is no sledding in the city itself. The farms sit out in the forest, and every trip here includes the transfer from the centre or from Santa Claus Village. Below: what each one gives you, and which to pick.

The quick answer

For a real safari, book the 6 km self-drive ($245, up to 20 guests, pickup in town or at Santa Claus Village) or the small-group safari ($245, 6 to 10 km, eight guests at most, kota fire after). Want hotel pickup? The 5 to 8 km Viator trip is $261. The $70 Santa Claus Village ride is 2.5 km with a musher driving, and the $210 combo day has a 500 m husky ride.

What husky safaris can you do in Rovaniemi?

Five, on this site: a 2.5 km ride at Santa Claus Village, a combo day with a 500 m ride, and three self-drive safaris of 5 to 10 km.

How far are the husky farms from Rovaniemi?

Around half an hour by bus. The 6 km self-drive itinerary lists 35 minutes out and 30 back, with 2 hours at the farm.

The farms need space, quiet and forest trails, so they sit outside town. You won't drive: every trip on this site includes the transfer. The 6 km trip picks up in Rovaniemi centre or at Santa Claus Village; one guest wrote that they "parked our rental car at Santa Claus Village and were picked up from there by the [...] shuttle bus." The small-group safari collects you in the city centre or at Napapiiri, the Arctic Circle area. The Viator trip comes to your hotel lobby; be there 10 minutes early, the guide waits up to 15 minutes.

Santa Claus Village itself is about 8 km north of the centre, and local bus 8 runs there year round (Santa Claus Village). That's where the short ride starts. Be on time for everything: the small-group listing says late arrivals at the pickup point can't be refunded.

Is the Santa Claus Village husky ride a real safari?

No. It's a 2.5 km ride of 7 to 12 minutes where a musher drives and you sit. Lovely, but short.

The Santa Claus Village ride runs in 30-minute slots in the forest next to the village. Sleds fit up to four adults, and solo travellers share with other guests. Afterwards: hot juice and cookies in a kota and a chat with the mushers. Guests rate it 4.7 from 1,587 reviews, and the main gripe in the reviews is length: some say the ride feels too short and ask for more sled time.

We'd book it for small children, for grandparents who can't stand on a sled, or as a quick add-on to a day at the village. Not as your one husky experience. A 6 km safari takes you further into the forest, puts you on the brake and leaves time with the dogs after.

Which Rovaniemi husky safari should you book?

The small-group safari for the most trail and the smallest group, the 6 km trip for easy logistics and kids, the Viator trip if you want hotel pickup.

  • Small-group safari with kota fire ($245, 4.9 from 220): 6 to 10 km, eight guests at most, then sausages and marshmallows by the fire. Drivers must be 18 or over, and under-4s aren't accepted. One guest: "it wasn't a mass event. A wonderful tour, and it was well planned."
  • 6 km self-drive ($245, 4.6 from 1,569): the big, reliable option. Groups of up to 20, sleds for two adults plus one to three children, 250 kg per sled, puppies after. Guests praise the organisation; the common complaint is length. "Only the ride with the huskies could be longer for the price."
  • Self-drive with hotel pickup ($261, 4.5 from 149): 5 to 8 km, eight guests at most, collected from your lobby. Reviews are more mixed. One guest thought the drive "felt shorter" than listed and mentioned about 20 minutes of waiting around at the end.

Our pick for most adults is the small-group trip: the most trail per dollar in Rovaniemi and the smallest group. For families with kids under 4, the 6 km trip is the one that takes them.

Is the reindeer, huskies and Santa Claus Village day worth it?

As a family day out, yes. As a husky safari, no. The husky ride is 500 metres and so is the reindeer ride.

The combo day is the most reviewed product on this site: 4.6 from 2,418 guests. Six hours, pickup in town, a reindeer farm where you drive your own reindeer sledge for 500 m (and get a reindeer driver's licence), a 500 m husky sleigh ride, salmon soup or a vegetarian soup, then free time at Santa Claus Village. Children under 150 cm get 10 minutes of mini-snowmobiling.

Guests love the day and the soup. They also say what you'd expect: the rides are short. One wrote, "We just would have liked the husky ride to last a little longer." If huskies are the point of your trip, book a safari and do Santa separately. If you have two kids under eight and one free day, this is the easy answer.

When is husky season in Rovaniemi?

On snow, usually from late November or early December to April. Around Christmas you get about two hours of daylight; by late January about five.

Snow timing changes every year. Rovaniemi often has snow on the ground by November, but trails need depth before the farms run full safaris, and early-season loops can be shorter. In autumn some farms run husky rides on wheeled carts instead.

Light is the other thing to plan for. Visit Rovaniemi gives about 2 hours 16 minutes of daylight on 24 December and about 5 hours 10 minutes by 24 January (Visit Rovaniemi). The blue twilight of the polar night lasts from mid-November to mid-January (Visit Rovaniemi, winter). Midday departures get the best of it. Month-by-month detail is in the best time for a husky safari, and the Christmas rush has its own Christmas 2026 post.

What should you ask a Rovaniemi husky farm before booking?

Where the dogs live, how many runs a day they do, how many rest days they get, what happens in summer and what happens to old dogs.

Lapland is where the 2026 welfare row landed, and Rovaniemi is its biggest husky town. In April 2026 the Finnish animal welfare group SEY said it had material from dozens of sled dog farms showing mistreatment: dogs shivering, caged, on chains too short. Yle could not verify all of it, but municipal welfare vets said similar cases had been documented in Lapland, and police were investigating a small number of cases. Not every farm. But enough to ask.

Good farms answer these without blinking. Reviewers on the trips here mention some of it: a guide who told them about a retirement rehoming programme, a farm that put five dogs on each sled instead of four on a heavy-snow day. We can't vouch for any farm, and we won't. The full list of questions and red flags is in is husky sledding ethical.

Eight guests at most, 6 to 10 km, and a guest who says the guides know every dog by name.
